Beijing to London 2002 - Train out of China
From Worldtraveller
I arrived at Beijing Station feeling sad to be leaving China. It was a beautiful fresh morning, and as I passed Tiananmen Square on my way to the station, the raising of the flag ceremony was getting under way in the dawn light. But I was also looking forward to the journey ahead, and anticipating great things when the train pulled slowly out of the station at just after 7am.
The first day went very quickly. I watched Beijing slowly get sparser and the countryside emerge from beneath it, and then for a long time watched out for bits of the Great Wall which appeared by the track. By the evening we were in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia, and soon after nightfall we reached the border at Erlian, where all the wheels on the train were changed so that the train could continue on Mongolia's wider tracks.
