The morning after the conference finished, I got a taxi back to the airport, noticed that the buildings under construction on the way had grown perceptibly, and then flew to Nanjing. I'd have liked to stay a couple more days in Beijing to revisit old haunts, but I had to hurry to Nanjing to meet my friend Lauren, who I'd met in Bulgaria and who was now working in Nanjing. I spent two days there enjoying the laid-back city.
