Although I've been to the Nordic countries many times, the closest I'd got to the Arctic Circle was at Dettifoss in northern Iceland, about 50 miles south of the magic line. So, one December weekend in 2006 I decided to go all the way, flew to Tampere and got an overnight train to Rovaniemi, to see what Lappland was like in the grip of winter.
