La Palma 2006 - Around the island
From Worldtraveller
As it turned out, things weren't much better at sea level. It was warm, at least, but the streets were wet. In the evening another torrential downpour began, and the streets of Santa Cruz were empty.
The next day was sunny, and I set off for a drive. My plan had been to drive around as much of the island as I could, and I set off for the volcanoes at the south end. But on the way the weather turned bad yet again, and it took me well over an hour to drive the twenty miles or so to Fuencalientes. I drove to Volcán San Antonio, which erupted in 1677, but had to sit in the car for a while until the rain eased off. I had a look around there before driving on to Volcán Teneguía, site of the most recent Canarian eruption in 1971. Luckily it was nice enough to go for a walk here, and I scrambled quickly up to the summit. I spent a little while enjoying the bracing Atlantic winds before it started to rain again. In thick mist I drove back to Santa Cruz. My sightseeing for this trip was done.
