For ages, Portugal had been an unsightly gap on the map of all the countries I've ever been to. I was strangely reluctant to go there, put off by the fact that I can speak reasonable Spanish and so can avoid language-related confusion by sticking to that part of Iberia. But I couldn't stay away for ever, Ryanair fly nice and cheaply to Porto, and an endlessly rainy British summer inspired me to head south.
