Portugal 2007 - Ribeira and Vila Nova de Gaia

Porto lies on the north bank of the Douro, and on the south side is Vila Nova de Gaia, where port is stored and aged in large quantities. Connecting the two is the striking iron Ponte Dom Luis I.

London had been under grey skies for weeks before I came to Portugal, so I couldn't get enough of the sun. There was some sort of parade in Gaia, with marching bands passing by, and I sat by the river watching this go on for a while as the hot air rippled over the river. On the other side of the river, the historic centre of Porto looked impressive, with buildings seemingly piled on top of each other on the sides of the steep hills, with rust-coloured roofs shining in the sun.
